Cleaning the oven – why and how often does it have to be?

We like to turn a blind eye to avoid the annoying cleaning job on all fours when it comes to oven hygiene. But admittedly, it is not appetizing when charred remains of pizza, cake, or Sunday rolls romp around in the oven.

It would help if you, therefore, cleaned the oven at regular intervals. With everyday use, best every three months. If you bake, roast, and braise a lot in the range, you should clean the oven more often. If you plan to clean the stove in the future, when you bring your kitchen up to scratch, don’t forget it.

Step by step – this is how you clean the oven correctly.

Fortunately, there are some ingenious tricks you can use to clean your oven with simple home remedies.

Step 1: clean the removable parts and the baking tray

First, remove all moving parts, such as the baking tray, grid, and side guides. In some ovens, you can even remove the base plate. Soak the loose parts in hot soapy water for about half an hour. Then clean it with a dish brush. A sponge and scouring milk help if the dirt is too stubborn.

If this procedure is still not enough to clean the encrusted baking sheet, you now have another arrow in your quiver:

  • Spread about 250 grams of table salt on the tray.
  • Please put it in the oven at 50 degrees for about 40 minutes. The salt should then have turned brown.
  • Then it should be pretty easy to loosen the baked goods. Use a sponge and warm water if necessary.

Step 2: the interior – now it’s time to get burned in

First, wipe the inside, i.e., the walls and floor of the oven, with a cloth, warm water, and a little washing-up liquid. This removes easily detachable dirt and crumbs and allows you to see better where you need to top up next.

You don’t necessarily need an expensive oven cleaner or another chemical club to remove burnt-on food residues from the cooking space.

1. Soak encrustations in the oven

This works best with steam. Fill the baking sheet with water and place it in the oven at around 150 degrees. The hot steam is distributed in the interior and dissolves burnt-in material. Once the water has evaporated, let the oven cool down briefly and remove the dirt with a damp cloth.

  1. Pre-treat the oven with vinegar

If you want to intensify the soaking effect, add the juice of two lemons or about 50 ml of vinegar essence to the water. Citric acid and acetic acid are typical cleaning agents and release their effect when cleaning the stove. Advantage of lemon: This neutralizes unpleasant odors at the same time.

3. clean oven racks with baking powder

Baking soda is a natural miracle cure that can be used for pretty much any household problem in addition to baking cakes. It is supposed to remove nasty stains in the oven. Cleaning the oven with baking powder works like this: Mix two packets of baking powder with five tablespoons of water. Spread the resulting paste with a sponge on the encrusted areas on the oven floor. Leave on for an hour. Then wipe it with a damp cloth, and the oven will shine like new. You can also use this trick to clean a heavily soiled baking sheet. If you only have baking soda at home instead of baking powder, you can use it similarly.

  1. Clean the sidewalls of the oven

The best way to do this is to use a spray-on liquid. Instead of oven spray, good old washing soda use. Soda or sodium carbonate has use as a cleaning agent for thousands of years, so why not get the oven back in top shape? To clean the stove with soda, pour two tablespoons of soda into an empty spray bottle and fill it up with water. Shake well, spray on the sidewalls and leave to take effect. After about half an hour, wipe it off with a damp cloth.

  1. Clean the viewing window

Unsightly brown deposits and stains often form on the viewing window, which can hardly be removed with a damp cloth or glass cleaner. You can also easily clean the glass with the household remedies already mentioned here. If the dirt is very stubborn, spread soda powder directly on the glass. Moisten with a little warm water and leave to work.

  2. Remove dirt from the heating elements.

The heating elements can only clean with a damp cloth if they are dirty. This also applies to the spaces between the heating elements.

Don’t forget the rubber seal on the door to clean oven racks.

Bread and pizza crumbs tend to get stuck there. So vacuum it briefly and then clean the seal with warm water and detergent from Fairy or neutral soap.

Step 3: clean the outside of the oven

  • Wipe the outside of the viewing window with a cloth and warm soapy water, like the oven door handle.
  • Fat splatters often form on the controls during cooking. In connection with dust, this turns into unsightly deposits. You can tackle this with a degreaser, such as a kitchen spray from Meister Proper.
  • Burnt-in residue on the hob should remove immediately after cooking. Old leftovers can remove wonderfully with a toothbrush and an all-purpose cleaner.
