Along the way, varied landscape includes nature preserves, shoreline, sand dunes, marshes and some of the city’s many world-class museums. Separate paths for pedestrians also make this path a safe bet if you want to push the limits of your women’s electric bike. The 606

For a quick ride through some of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods, hop on this 2.7-mile path constructed on an old elevated rail line. Along the journey from Wicker Park to Humboldt Park, you can stop for a picnic, enjoy the observatory and integrated art installations.

Major Taylor Trail

This 7.6-mile trail honors the memory of Marshall “Major” Taylor, who broke world records in the 1800s as one of the first competitive African-American cyclists. The bike path takes you through the Far South Side, winding through residential areas, green space and forested nature preserves. Jump on the Major Taylor Trail on 81st Street at Dan Taylor Woods and prepare for an enjoyable ride across the Little Calumut River ending in Whistler Woods.

Des Plaines River Trail

If you’re prepared for a 56-mile ride, this riverfront route is the one to choose. You’ll travel from the trailhead in Elmwood Park through many of the metro area’s protected natural areas, including Ryerson Conservation Area, Adler Memorial Park and Gurnee Woods Forest Preserve. Like the 606, the Illinois Prairie Path takes advantage of unused rail lines, spanning 61 miles through the western suburbs of Chicago. This crushed limestone path travels through prairie wildlife areas with branch trails that lead you through Aurora, Elgin and other surrounding areas. Dating to 1963, the Prairie Path makes history as the oldest rails-to-trails project in the United States.
