Now eBay’s original name; which was Auction Web was founded in California on September 3, 1995. This name was founded by a French-born Iranian-American computer programmer Pierre Omidyar

Following this, the very first item that was sold on the Auction Web was a broken laser pointer for $14.83. But just before Auction Web started, the site that later became eBay, it’s owner Omidyar had a one-man consulting firm which was named as Echo Bay because it sounded cool to him.

Now when the internet address was supposed to be registered Omidyar took EchoBay.com as the official address. Where later on, this address was shortened and named as eBay.
