How can we forget educational toys that debuted in this year’s CES? Toy robots that teach coding are fairly common these days, we’ve written like… a lot of them on this website. So why are we here again with yet another coding robot toy? Well, this one’s awesome! The Root robot by Root Robotics and Coding & Play doesn’t simply stop at teaching kids the basics of coding. It moves on to increasingly difficult concepts and tasks to really build that solid foundation.

How the Root Robot Works

The Root Robot doesn’t look like other coding robot toys. It’s sort of a flat disk that reminds me of a Lego car I built way back in secondary school Design and Technology classes. As I said, this is meant to accompany your kid for quite a while, but how does the Root robot do that? Well, the robot itself doesn’t. It’s the accompanying app that does this.

Currently, games and exercises are split into 3 levels of difficulty. The 1st level is graphical programming. This is your basic drag and drop icons and blocks together for kids to learn what everything does, and which combinations do what. The 2nd level moves to more complex stuff. Here, bits and pieces of coding language start popping up. They act as in-between pieces that show how function paths work. The 3rd and final level goes into full on coding. You can choose between the current top 3 most popular coding languages: Javascript, Python, and Swift. For clarity, kids can see the same functions they’ve created and used in level 1. They’re just  codes now.

Completing the Curriculum

By the time the child finishes all 3 levels, they should be equipped with everything they know to write codes like any professional programmer. I’m talking stuff like exporting a working code that actually works in external environments. Honestly, this makes me excited and scared at the same time. Kids these days have terrifying toys.

Updates and Pricing

The Root robot should come out in June this year. So at USD199, you can get your kid a coding robot companion that will teach them all the tips and tricks they need to code like a pro.
