Pokémon Go was a startling success that startled a lot of people (mostly the older peeps), and it’s not a surprise for other fandoms to start fantasizing a similar app game. As one of the biggest fandoms out there, Potterheads have been demanding an Augmented Reality game for them to live out their wildest magical dreams of wielding wands and casting spells. Although this game has nothing to do with the Harry Potter franchise or Warner Brothers, Maguss is a multiplayer game for aspiring wizards and witches who never quite got their Hogwarts letter a chance to enter the world of dueling, exploring, and brewing.
While it has places that pretty overlap with Pokémon Go in terms of controls and interface (especially the exploring part), Maguss is a much more complex game in itself because there are different areas you can delve into instead of doing the same things over and over again. My favorite part of this app game is that you don’t necessarily need to have its accompanying wand accessory in order to play it. I’m saying this as a person who likes playing games and other ‘nerdy’ (I use this term very loosely) stuff, but all in private and when no one is actively looking at me. Of course, if you are totally fine with waving a wand around in public with your friends despite people’s inevitable staring and gawking, then by all means, get the wand and live my dreams for me. Since the game is available on both iOS and Android, the wand is compatible with both systems, connecting via Bluetooth. One charge should get you 48 hours of game play, so you can easily stick this in your bag or pocket and take it out whenever.
Now onto the actual game itself: what is there to do? You can choose between dueling, exploring, and brewing, or even all 3 at once. Dueling is exactly what the name suggests, flinging spells at other players and blocking curses coming your way. The Pokémon Go way of doing this is fighting in proximity mode where you can seek out nearby players and have duels with them. I imagine this will be very awesome and fun if both parties really met up and went all out with their wands; so if you’re interested in playing this game, maybe you can organize Maguss tournaments with players in your city. If you don’t have a lot of free time to go out and about, you can go with the long-distance mode and have the system match you with a random opponent, much like most games out there.
The exploring part of this app game is pretty much the same as Pokémon Go, because it uses GPS location. So as you walk around, you discover ingredients for potions, and get to fight monsters and even lost dungeons. The awesome thing about their dungeon system is that if you want to fight the boss, you’ll have to walk there. This is not a game you can cheat your way through because your office happens to be right at a PokeStop with bored office workers putting up lure every hour. Of course, if you decide you’re not quite powerful enough to deal with the bosses, you can always walk away.
For down time, you can choose to go back to your work, or partake in some potion brewing work. From the video, I think this is either going to be super fun or the most annoying thing in the world. Casting spells with the wand in dueling mode is not too hard, because everything is rather fast-paced and the motions are kept simple. But with brewing you can take your time, which can mean that the game developers can potentially put out harder symbols for players to draw. I haven’t gotten the chance to play this app game myself, so I am merely speculating.
Now I know we all want a chance to fulfil our childhood dreams of attending Hogwarts and being able to do magic in general, but I must say that Maguss is currently in closed beta mode. This means you can either join in on the fun early by supporting them on Indiegogo, or wait until everything is done and bug-free which may take a while.
