I don’t exactly travel much, but most of the apps and websites I frequent are catered to North American users. This means I have fairly little access to the content that everyone else is enjoying, especially in terms of Netflix and 8tracks. Oh, how I miss listening to the Slytherin and Ravenclaw study music playlists. And knowing that I’ll be in China for Christmas this year means no Facebook, no YouTube, no nothing. (Obviously, my parents did this so that I can spend time with the family, and not with my Internet.) If you are going to be traveling overseas, but want all the access to your home country internet. Home Systems‘ AlwaysHome dongle is going to be your new best friend. This is not the same as VPN (virtual private networks) because it is much faster and way more user-friendly.

How the AlwaysHome Dongle Works

To some extent, this functions like your normal VPN, but instead of using an external proxy, it uses your own. As long as you have a router or an old phone or tablet that stays permanently at home, you can use that as your home proxy. With the AlwaysHome accompanying app or the dongle itself, you can surf the Internet without restrictions. Simply connect to the local Internet network through AlwaysHome. Whether you’re in China, Europe, or any place with location limitations, the AlwaysHome dongle will get you through. I myself am very tempted to get one because imagine all the drama series and movies I can watch on Netflix. In case any of you don’t know, the Hong Kong Netflix doesn’t have too many shows that I really like. And the movie selection is borderline pathetic.

Why AlwaysHome? Why Not VPN?

As I said, it’s much faster. What this means is that the things will not only load faster, everything will also be in better viewing quality. As a person who is used to fast wifi and 4G data, I don’t think I can handle anything below 720p without feeling uncomfortable. (#firstworldproblems) When I was in Japan last year and my mom wanted to watch her favorite drama series airing in Hong Kong, the VPN I used was so slow to load she gave up. That’s how bad things can get. So if there’s a dongle that gets you Internet speeds of your home, what will you choose? I mean, this is especially important for people who go on frequent business trips.

Specs

The AlwaysHome dongle is about the size of a slightly bulky USB, so it’s pretty small and light. This makes it easy to bring around. You can slip it in your pocket or throw it in your laptop bag without taking up much space. The dongle’s WAN-optimized software can connect to any network you want with 3-10 times faster internet speeds. Connect to Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, and Roku for the best viewing experience.
