As vintage things are becoming increasingly popular, making CDs and vinyl much more popular again especially amongst hipsters, I’m going to bet my money on cassette tapes next. You know those things you used to pull all the tape out as a kid and then get yelled at? Yeah, those. Now since vinyls are really only suited for the home, cassette tapes can actually be portable with BrainMonk’s ELBOW player.
The ELBOW player features a biaxial arm that is able to rotate upwards (so you can put in the cassette tape) and sideways (so you can switch the playing direction). Playback is controlled by the wheel that allows you to increase the volume or fast-forward the tape. For charging and transferring audio to a computer, there is a mini USB-port (same ones that most android phones use), and also an audio plug for privacy. There is also a pin should you feel the need to make it a throwback fashion statement.
Like the vinyl, cassette tapes are a cultural icon. So by deconstructing cassette players to their core functions and showing the cassette tape in its entirety, ELBOW hopes to offer users a fresh experience in both enjoying the music and also having a physical connection to it.
