How to melt chocolate chips

There are several ways to melt chocolate chips. We’ll show you two melting methods and explain how to make a perfect cake icing from melted chocolate.

If you like to bake cakes with chocolate icing,  create pralines, or give away homemade chocolate creations, you first have to melt chocolate. This is not always easy to melt chocolate chips. It often causes a mess or even burns. We’ll show you how to melt the chocolate and also make it shine quickly.

If you want to make someone happy with chocolate, you should always make sure that it is fair trade chocolate. Cocoa beans are often grown and harvested under poor conditions. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler

The most traditional and popular method of melting chocolate is melting in a water bath. This will prevent the chocolate from burning, as the water only gently heats the pot.

What you need to melt chocolate in a water bath:

  • Chocolate or couverture of your choice
  • A perfect, sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Saucepan that is larger than the bowl
  • Bowl (preferably made of metal)
  • If you don’t have such a bowl, a smaller saucepan that fits into the larger one will do
  • Spoon to stir

How to melt chocolate in a water bath:

  1. Chop the chocolate so that it melts quickly and evenly.
  2. Pour enough water into the (large) pot to not run over the rim and put the bowl in it.
  3. Put the chocolate in the bowl.
  4. Heat the water until the chocolate starts to melt. Make sure that the water does not boil under any circumstances!
  5. Set the stove to low and medium heat. Slowly stir the chocolate so that it melts evenly.
  6. When the chocolate is completely melted, you can remove the bowl and use it.

Melt the chocolate in the microwave

The fastest way to melt chocolate is to use the microwave method. But be careful: the chocolate can burn very quickly in the microwave. So make sure not to set the microwave too high and only leave the chocolate in it for a short time.

Here’s what you need to melt chocolate in the microwave:

  • Chocolate  or couverture of  your choice
  • A perfect, sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Microwave safe bowl

How to Melts Chocolate in the Microwave:

  1. Chop the chocolate into coarse, similar-sized pieces so that it melts evenly.
  2. Put the chocolate pieces in the bowl and put them in the microwave.
  3. Set the microwave to 600 watts and the timer to one minute.
  4. After a minute, take the chocolate out of the microwave and stir it well.
  5. If there are still too coarse pieces in the bowl, place them in the microwave again for about ten seconds and then stir them well. Repeat this step until the chocolate is completely melted.
